Meet the Bands

Shorty and Slim

Shorty and SlimA tropical breeze, a swaying palm tree, good friends, the sound of waves on the beach and Shorty & Slim. What more would a person need?

Shorty & Slim, a band out of Panama, play an original blend of calypso, reggae, soft rock and what they call “southern country,” south of the border, that is. The artists grew up with the best of both worlds, the American influence due to the Panama Canal and the Caribbean flavor of the Panamanian culture. Alex Reyes at 6 foot 5 and barely 150 pounds is obviously “Slim.” He is the driving force of the band and fills the roles of lead singer and guitarist on stage. He and David Seitz , “Shorty”, started the band in 1990 and things have been going uphill since. David plays lead guitar, sings background vocals and acts as the straight man when bantering with Alex between songs. Shorty & Slim have released five cds with Alex and David doing all the writing, arranging, and producing; not bad for an engineer and a science teacher. They have a cult following of people of all ages and cultures and all of their gigs are well attended by their loyal fans.

Rounding out the band is bass player Rowland Folse who has been with the band since its inception. Along with Omar Domingues on drums and Ruben Martinez on keyboards, they add the spice to the group. Listening to Shorty & Slim will make you smile, they guarantee it. From songs with a Latin beat that will make you get up and dance to their original calypso about life in the tropics, it is music about having a great time in this life we are given.

Cloud 9BEACH SCENES: For Cloud 9, live rock 'n' roll is here to stay
By TAMARA McCLARAN Times-Union/Shorelines staff writer.

For many people who frequent the Beaches-area club scene, classic rock 'n' roll is the music they grew up listening to and the sound that continues to move them today.

"There is something about this music that has become ingrained in our society," said Cloud 9 front man Robert Archey III. "This music has become today's classic standards."

The music is high-energy re-creations of vintage rock 'n' roll hits, and it has earned Jacksonville band Cloud 9 honors as the area's best rock 'n' roll cover band in local opinion polls. In addition to Archey, who plays guitar, keyboards and sings vocals, the band includes Dan Walters on drums and vocals and Rick Nes Smith on bass and vocals.

Cloud 9 brings the tradition of early rock 'n' roll alive musically, playing a mix of rock, rhythm and blues and soul from the 1950s, '60s and '70s. The band's huge repertoire also includes songs from the 1980s and '90s.
